Week of February 10th

Week of February 10th

First Grade
First graders learned about symmetry. We worked on several Valentine's themed projects where students created symmetrical hearts.

Second Grade
Second graders learned about glass art and the process of making glass. Students were inspired by the work Dale Chihuly, a famous glass artist. We began a two-week collaborative sculpture project and students designed plastic cups using various colors and patterns. The cups will be melted and each class will assemble their sculptures next week.

Third Grade
Third graders continued to work on their Claes Oldenburg food sculptures. Students also learned about mosaics and the work of Isaiah Zagar, a local Philadelphia mosaic artist. Students created their own mosaics using various paper materials with a Valentine's theme.

Fourth Grade
As all eyes are on Socchi, Russia, for the Winter 2014 Olympics, the fourth graders learned about Russian architecture. Students were inspired by the bright colors, patterns, and "onion domes" of Russian architecture. First students used watercolors and a "wash" technique to create a vibrant sky for their background. Then, students began to create intricate Russian inspired landscapes.

 Fifth Grade

Fifth graders started a unit on perspective this week. We learned about one-point perspective and students used this technique in their drawings to create three-dimensional shapes.

Next, students started a landscape project in one-point perspective. Using this new technique, students began to design their own "dream cities."

Week of February 3rd

Even with the snow, students at Penn Wood continued to create art!

First Grade:

First graders began a two week "wax resist" project. Students used crayons to create their own aquariums. Then students water-colored over the crayon and observed as the wax of the crayons "resisted" the watercolors.

Second Grade:

Second graders learned about the work of Henri Rousseau. We looked at his jungle landscapes and students used colored pencils and various materials to create their own jungle landscapes.

Third Grade:
Third graders started a two week clay project. As a class we looked at work by Claes Oldenburg, and students were inspired by his large scale food sculptures. We even discovered that he has some of his work displayed in Center City Philadelphia. Students created their own food sculptures out of clay. The work is going to be fired in the kiln and then students will be able to glaze it!

Fourth Grade:
Fourth graders learned about the artwork of Wayne Thiebaud, especially his work with desserts. We learned about shading and students used pastels to create highlights and shadows in their work. Students experimented with both oil and chalk pastel.

Fifth Grade:

Fifth graders worked to complete their Pop Art projects from the previous week.
